The benefits and risks of being online.

Benefits & Risks

Helping students to understand how to be safe online allows them to benefit from all the opportunities afforded them. Mason City Schools implements protective measures while they’re in our care and on our campus but there’s no filter or magic code to protect all students at all times.

While students are at home, there are steps you can take to help keep them safe. This course focuses on two primary areas:

  1. Education & strategies for discussing the benefits and dangers
  2. Restricting access through hardware and software

Educating and talking with your child creates a safe environment to discuss online benefits and risks. There are times, though, where restrictions make sense. Turning off internet access to ensure your child gets a full night’s sleep might be helpful. We’ll help you accomplish those tasks.

Being online provides incredible opportunity for your child to learn, experiment, write, read, create, curate, and critically think. All of these are important to the educational ecosystem and to your child's growth.
