K-12 Remote Learning and Grading Overview

We are all living in unprecedented times and the impact on our lives, persoonlik, sosiaal, and professionally, is significant. MCS is daartoe verbind om ons Kultuurgids in hierdie tyd uit te leef en om 'n Comet Cares-benadering tot onderrig en leer te weerspieël. Ons Comet Cares-benadering laat ons deernisvol wees, reageer, and equitable to our students’ and families’ unique situations and circumstances.

Our approach to grading reflects the following principles, rooted in our Culture Guide:

While we adjust to a new remote learning experience, ons fokus is eerstens op studenteleer en om ons studente se welstand te verseker. During this unprecedented time, students’ grades are secondary to student learning.

Strong relationships and open communication among our school teams, studente, and families are essential elements for supporting students’ engagement in learning.

Students and their families are having a wide range of experiences during this worldwide crisis. Erkenning van die uitdagings waarmee hulle te kampe het, en dat hulle buite hul beheer is, ons beoordelingsbeleid mag geen kind skade berokken nie.

Grades K-5 Remote Learning and Grading

nota: In grades K-5, students receive standards-based scores on report cards rather than traditional grades. Standards-based scores share information about students’ progress towards mastery of standards.

  • Students are expected to engage with Remote Learning Experiences and progress in their learning. Students will demonstrate engagement by responding to activities and completing RLE assignments sent via email (K-4) or posted on Schoology (Gr. 5). If students need extra support, families or students should reach out to their teacher with questions, needs, and concerns.
  • Students who are actively engaging in Remote Learning Experiences will be “held harmless” for second semester scores. Graded RLE learning assignments/activities during remote learning can only maintain or raise a student’s standards based score.
  • Our school teams will make a Comet Cares Effort to connect with students who are not engaging in remote learning. A teacher, in conjunction with the building team (administrators, counselors, and support educators where appropriate), will make every attempt to connect with the student and family to determine how to support the student in engaging in the RLE learning and assignments/activities.
  • Students who do not engage in Remote Learning Experiences, or who do not show basic levels of understanding, will receive a standards based score that reflects their understanding at the date of closure. Our school teams will make every effort to support each student. If students are unable to engage in remote learning even with those supports from the school team, the school team will collaborate with students’ families to determine future steps for the student’s learning.

Grades 6-12 Remote Learning and Grading

nota: In grade 6-12, students receive letter grades (A-F).  Grades are calculated on a semester basis, with credit being awarded at the end of each semester. There will not be second semester final exams this year.

  • Students are expected to engage with Remote Learning Experiences and progress in their learning. Students will demonstrate engagement by logging into their Schoology courses and completing and submitting RLE assignments and activities, including graded learning components that allow them to demonstrate their understanding of the content. Students who need extra support should reach out to their teacher with questions, needs, and concerns.

  • Students who are actively engaging in Remote Learning Experiences will be “held harmless” for second semester grades. Any graded assignment/activity during remote learning cannot harm a student’s 2nd-semester grade for a course, i.e. cannot lower their grade from what they had at the beginning of remote learning (April 6, 2020). Graded RLE learning assignments/activities during remote learning can maintain or raise a student’s grade.

  • Students who do not engage in Remote Learning Experiences, or who do not show basic levels of understanding, will receive an “Incomplete.” Our school teams will make every effort to support each student. If students are unable to engage in remote learning even with those supports from the school team, the school team will collaborate with students and/or family to determine future steps for the student’s learning.
